(I couldn't find the video, so here's the PSP itself. Sorry.)
This commercial has bugged me for a few weeks now.
Does a girl have to have a purple console to play video games? Are girls strictly regulated to playing Hannah Montana and other “shovelware” as opposed to slightly more involved games, like Zelda? Why is this?
Surely Hannah Montana games aren’t aimed at boys, but they aren’t the only games that girls are allowed to play. The idea behind this commercial just echoes and reinforces a negative stereotype against both women and video games; that women can’t play serious games, and that video games are for porky basement-dwelling men.
It’s ridiculous that we’d see this from Sony, who used to claim that the DS and Wii were casual and their systems were serious. If you’re targeting “hardcore” gamers, don’t try your hardest to be a sexist DS. I get that they’re trying to make more females into hardcore gamers, but this isn’t the right starting block.
Any thoughts? Am I just thinking too much? I’m sure the commercials are going to draw some girls to the PSP, but won’t they be disappointed? Disney’s video games are notoriously bad (perhaps save for some that I haven’t played, like Kingdom Hearts), and, up until now, the PSP has been focused on serious or hardcore games, meaning that more casual games like Mario games don’t exist.
If I had a daughter, I’d probably avoid buying her the sexist handheld. Just saying.

It’s just a color, calm down. People get offended way too easily these days.
It’s not the color that I’m so concerned about. I have no problem with them releasing a new color. It’s obviously targeted at females, and that’s understandable.
It’s that it had to come with a crappy Hannah Montana game and a commercial that claims “GIRLS PLAY TOO.” It’s that they’re literally saying “Hey! Girls can play video games now! It’s totally cool. We made you this second-rate game!”
And don’t argue that the game is NOT second-rate. TV show games are almost always second-rate, especially Disney ones. I know this from experience–my next-door neighbor had a host of them.
I actually don’t get offended that easily, just so you know.
This one doesn’t really bug me. I mean it’s Hannah Montana so it’s targeted at younger girls. I mean her main fan base is like 8 year old right? Plus girls are used to it. I mean seriously have you seen the wimpy moves they gave Princess Peach on Super Smash Bros? I suppose we have Samus going for us though.
And you have Princess Zelda when she’s in man costumes. But I haven’t played Super Smash Bros. since I was in seventh grade, so I don’t know if those moves are good or what.
You might have Kirby. I’m not sure what Kirby is. Besides awesome.
I have a pink DS. And regardless of the game I put in it, it’s still a pink DS and therefore makes me smile. I like to buy girly colored things so they don’t get stolen. Men are far less likely to swipe the pink stapler on my desk than a grey or black one. Same goes for the DS.
I have a white DS and a black DSi. I’m such a dork.
I totally see what you mean, though. I wouldn’t steal a pink one (I probably wouldn’t steal anything, but whatever).
It does suck that this so awesome psp has to be released in a package with hannah montana because- yes eight year olds watch hannah montana and guess what? no eight year old girl or her parent is going to spend 200 dollars on this bundle. I’m 24, that’s the age range I believe will be buying this and I do like girly games- like the sims and littlebigplanet(not that those are girl only games…)but I like racing games and gta games also. So I’m not offended, I’m just mad that a. it only comes in purple- what about pink???? and b. I’m going to end up spending more money on a bundle with crap I don’t want just to get the one thing I do want.
thats fresh
i love the hannah montana psp
