I can not stand it when people put “the” in front of titles of things that don’t need it. This is mainly concerned with “non-gamers” and Wiis, and even more so with Wii Fit.
Have you ever heard somebody say “I just got the Wii Fit“? Isn’t it terribly annoying? Hello, the name of the game is Wii Fit. You don’t say “We just went and saw the Marley and Me.” The console is called Wii. You don’t say “We just bought the Sausage Biscuit at the McDonalds in the New York City.” (I just overdid it a bit there.)
The only exception is when people are speaking of the console in general: “The Wii is the best-selling gaming console on the market today.” It is also acceptable to say “the Wii console” or “the Wii Fit game”, as those include parenthetical information and could be reworded like so: “Wii, the console, …” and “Wii Fit, the game, …”.
Sorry to be such a Grammarnazi.
